North Charleston, SC (January 2, 2009) - The latest research into myopia or shortsightedness by the University of Melbourne reveals that people who wear glasses are not stereotypical geeks or nerds.

Earlier last year the University of Melbourne conducted a first of its kind study looking for a link between myopia and different personality traits. The results revealed from a comparison of family members and twins showed no link between myopia and introversion; however there was a significant but small association with myopia and Agreeableness.

“We have literally busted the myth that people who wear glasses are introverted or have particular personality characteristics. They are more likely to be agreeable and open, rather than closed and introverted,” says Prof Paul Baird of the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Eye Research Australia.

The report also noted that people should not delay in getting glasses, because they are worried about how they would look.

“This shows that people, particularly children, should not avoid or delay wearing glasses due to preconceived ideas about what it would imply about their personalities,” says Prof Paul Baird.

One of the main seven goals of IntrovertCentral.com was to help dismiss many of the stereotypes surrounding introversion. The stereotypical nerd/geek construct of a person with acne and braces wearing glasses and hitched up trousers that would rather be reading than doing anything sociable is very prevalent and powerful, but not very accurate according to this report. This is a great day for those among us who wear glasses. So the next time somebody give you a hard time about your additional set of eyes tell them that they help me see a broader perspective, and be more open because of it.
